About

Our client is one of the largest health systems in Texas, with an annual revenue exceeding $10 billion. They operate over 2,500 beds across 12 hospitals, including three regional hospitals, and over 200 outpatient clinics, employing more than 25,000 healthcare professionals and support staff. Their services include a Level I trauma center, specialty care facilities, inpatient and outpatient clinics, and an academic medical school affiliation, generating approximately $300 million in local community benefit annually.

The Situation

After 15+ years of utilizing Cerner PathNet, our client recognized the need to enhance their Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and provide better patient care by transitioning away from Cerner PathNet towards Epic Beaker. This transition would allow them to take advantage of cutting-edge technology and advanced features to streamline laboratory operations, improve patient outcomes, and decrease costs across the organization.

The Solution

To ensure a smooth transition, Oakwolf Group’s leadership team and LIS specialists worked closely with the EHR Directors, specifically the LIS application manager, to discuss best practices and approaches for installing Epic Beaker at the CP and AP level. Through a 3-4 month project discovery period, we developed a comprehensive plan for the Beaker implementation, which included discussions around third-party blood bank systems and middleware solutions to integrate with the current instruments and workflows of the health system. We collaborated closely with our client’s internal FTE team, supported by multiple Beaker/LIS Subject Matter Experts (SME) and application analysts to assist and mentor throughout the project. Despite other consulting partners being considered, Oakwolf became the primary consulting partner for our client’s Epic Beaker implementation and optimization of the legacy LIS system.
